The late Ralph Eggleston was an American production designer, animator, art director and storyboard artist at Pixar Animation Studios. As one of Pixar’s early creative leaders, he helped define and expand the role of the production designer in animated filmmaking. Eggleston served as art director on Toy Story and contributed to the studio’s visual language across multiple films including Inside Out and WALL-E. He won the Academy Award in 2001 for Best Animated Short Film for For the Birds, and his work continues to influence how animated worlds are designed today.

In the first episode of Apotheosis: From the Archives, we revise a rare and reflective conversation featuring the late Ralph Eggleston. This discussion traces the origins of his creative life, beginning with the formative double feature he saw on his tenth birthday that set him on his path toward production design.

Beyond his inspirations, Eggleston and podcast host Alexander Whittenberg discuss his experience as Toy Story's art director and shaping the visual language of Pixar as one of the studio's first team members.

Eggleston reflects on the differences between designing for live action and animation, which requires every on-screen element from props to backgrounds to set dressing to be built from the ground up.

He takes us through examples of how design supports storytelling across his many animation projects, including the use of color and light in Finding Nemo to reflect Marlin’s journey, the stylized skies of Inside Out and the character-driven environments of WALL-E.
