PDC cofounders Inbal Weinberg and Kalina Ivanov met in 2014 and bonded over a shared passion for their craft and community, leading them to create a peer group focused on informal conversation and mutual support. Since founding the Collective, they have led initiatives, workshops, panels and podcasts while continuing to exchange set stories and career advice. Weinberg’s credits include The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Pariah and Beasts of No Nation as well as collaborations with Derek Cianfrance and Pedro Almodóvar. Ivanov’s work includes Little Miss Sunshine, Lovecraft Country, Grey Gardens and the recent HBO Max series The Penguin and Peacemaker.
To kick off the first episode of Apotheosis, Inbal Weinberg and Kalina Ivanov discuss the origins and evolution of the Production Designers Collective, tracing how a chance meeting and shared belief in generosity, inclusivity and collaboration grew into a global community.
They reflect on the Collective’s founding mission as a space for peer support and open dialogue, and how that vision led to the creation of the Gathering, an intimate conference on a Greek island that offers participants a unique opportunity to explore their craft and community.
The conversation also explores the birth of International Production Design Week, a grassroots, global celebration that empowers designers to organize events, share knowledge and raise public awareness of the craft. Together, they unpack how these initiatives work in concert to elevate the profession and foster meaningful community.
“I think our push to make production design more visible is also, in a way, a reframing of the collaborative process to be respectful to everyone’s craft.”
