Production designer and PDC member David Wasco and set decorator Sandy Reynolds-Wasco are a feature film team known for designing La La Land and their work with directors such as Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. Residents of Santa Barbara since 2012, they were asked by Roger Durling to design and install the very first exhibit for the Art Gallery in the new McHurley Film Center.

In honor of La La Land’s 10th anniversary, the inaugural exhibit will showcase the process of designing the film from early meetings with the director through scouting locations, to designing the constructed sets that tell the director’s story.

The Wascos have been doing their job for more than 40 feature films, and continue to be surprised that so many people do not know what their role in movie-making is. Sometimes even a director won’t have a complete understanding.

Their exhibition highlights the collaboration between the many members of the art department, including set designers and decorators, concept illustrators, graphic designers and crafts persons who work together to produce the “look” of a film.

In their exhibit, they have assembled an overview of the purview of their work via flat art from La La Land with the hope that visitors to the McHurley Cinema Center will leave with a better understanding of production design, and of course be entertained by the wonder of movie-making.
