Magnum Photos

The photographers associated with Magnum have been working with movie-makers since the agency's creation, and have generated some of the most iconic production stills and behind-the-scenes shots. A few books published around the world display the results: intimate portraits of such screen legends as Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, Ingrid Bergman, James Dean, Clark Gable and many others, as well as outstanding directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, Carol Reed, Francois Truffaut and Andrei Tarkovsky. Photographers include Eve Arnold, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Raymond Depardon, Philippe Halsman, Elliott Erwitt, David Seymour and Dennis Stock.

A collection of photographs by Magnum photographers depicting walls: material aspects, environments, colors, aging, and a reflection of societies across the world.

In 1962 the Magnum photographer René Burri presented the architect Le Corbusier a fold-out book, made with his own hands, containing photographs, dating back to 1953, that he had taken of the architect in various situations. The photographs it contains show Corbusier at the height of his creativity – in conversation, alone in his studio, at the construction site.

This very personal gift, with is owned by the Corbusier Foundation in Paris, has been reproduced in scrupulous facsimile with a text by René Burri and commentaries by the Corbusier connoisseur and editor Arthur Rüegg.

South African photographer Mikhael Subotzky and British artist Patrick Waterhouse worked at Ponte City, the iconic Johannesburg apartment building which is Africa’s tallest residential skyscraper, for more than six years. They photographed the residents and documented the building, and also researched its history through archival documents and images. The comprehensive results became a traveling exhibition as well as a massive, award-winning book project.

The Live Lab exhibition shows the resulting work of a three photographers residency in Clerkenwell, London. The residency saw photographers Mark Power, Carl de Keyzer and Olivia Arthur working alongside each other and Museum of London curator Anna Sparham, responding to the locality and transforming the Print Room into a working lab for a two-week period, printing and editing on site. The exhibition stands as a celebration of and an inquiry into the medium of photography and the creative process of making.

This landmark exhibition celebrates the 70th anniversary of Magnum Photos. Tracing the ideas and ideals behind the founding and development of the cooperative, the show explores the history of the second half of the 20th century through the lens of 75 masters, providing a new and insightful perspective on the contribution of these photographers to our collective visual memory. Featuring group and individual projects, the exhibition will include over two hundred prints as well as books, magazines, videos, and rarely before seen archival documents.
