Wynn is the first African American production designer in film history. A graduate of Boston University in Theatre Design, he transitioned to film as an assistant art director for distinguished production designers Richard Slybert, Patrizia Von Brandenstein, and Stuart Wurtzel.
As a production designer Wynn had a long term collaborative relationship with director Spike Lee, starting with She’s Gotta Have It and Do The Right Thing, through Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, and many more. His most recent project with Spike was Da 5 Bloods, For which he won an ADG Award. Wynn’s other film work includes Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man, Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks, Robert DeNiro’s A Bronx Tale, Barry Levinson’s Wag The Dog and Harold Ramis’ Analyze This. His recent projects include Hidden Figures, for which he won an ADG award, King Richard and Devotion.
Wynn has been a proud member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829 in NY for 40 years. He is the first African American designer to become a member of the ADG, and is the recipient of the ADG’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award. Wynn has served on the board of governors at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and was elected to a vice president position on the Academy Board. Wynn was recently honored with a Retrospective of his production design work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After this recognition, Wynn can finally call himself....an artist.
