Javier Alvariño Hernández
My name is Javier Alvariño and I have been working in production design and art direction since 2000. I made my feature film debut with Octavia, by Basilio Martín Patino in 2001. In 2005 I received the award for Best Production Design at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival for The Birthday (Eugenio Mira, 2004). Since then I have been lucky enough to make numerous feature films and advertising spots under the direction of some of the most interesting directors of recent Spanish cinema, such as Eugenio Mira, Jaume Balagueró, Javier Ruiz Caldera, Nacho Vigalondo, Borja Cobeaga, Paco Plaza, Koldo Serra or J. A. Bayona, with titles such as Verónica (Paco Plaza, 2017), Quien a Hierro Mata (Paco Plaza, 2019), Grand Piano (Eugenio Mira, 2013), Fe de Etarras (Borja Cobeaga, 2017), Promoción Fantasma (Javier Ruiz Caldera, 2012) or Mientras Duermes (Jaume Balagueró, 2011). More recently I have filmed La Virgen Roja, directed by Paula Ortiz, and which was premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2024, culminating its successful run winning the Goya award for Best Production Design in 2025. I have also held other positions, such as conceptual artist on Pan's Labyrinth, by Guillermo del Toro, without ever ceasing to combine film and advertising. In recent years, with the arrival of digital platforms, I have done a multitude of television projects, such as Alma (Sergio Sánchez, Netflix), I Don't Like to Drive (Borja Cobeaga, HBOMax), El Vecino (Nacho Vigalondo, Netflix), Romancero ( Tomás Peña, Prime) or more recently Her Majesty (Borja Cobeaga, Prime). I love Star Wars, Lego and designing universes. Living in Madrid since 2002.
