Akin McKenzie is a production designer known for his inclusive storytelling and attention to often-excluded cultural details. His latest work appears in the acclaimed The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Akin has also designed award-winning television and films, including Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us and Terence Nance’s Random Acts of Flyness, both praised for their focus on history and empowerment. His other notable credits include Rashid Johnson’s Native Son and Paul Dano’s Criterion Collection film Wildlife.
In addition to his work in film and television, Akin has collaborated with renowned musicians, creating films for Jay Z, Common, and Rage Against the Machine. A UCLA Film School graduate, Akin has lectured on production design at his alma mater and served as an advisor to the Sundance Institute Directors Lab and the Cannes Pavilion Afriques. His work reflects a deep commitment to thoughtful and empowering storytelling.
