Warren Gray (BFDG) is an Emmy-winning South African production designer based in Cape Town, with an expansive career spanning film, narrative TV, and commercials for clients across the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Africa. He earned his Bachelars in industrial design from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2000, supported by a partial bursary. Over a career of more than 25 years, Gray has lent his design expertise to renowned productions including Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (art department, 2013), The Forgiven (production designer, 2017), The Pirates of Somalia (art director, 2017), Noem My Skollie: Call Me Thief (production designer, 2016), the TV series SAF3 (2013-14), and more recently Catch Me a Killer, The Professionals, and Diamond Status. In 2024, Gray won the Daytime Emmy Award for Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design on Netflix's docuseries African Queens: Njinga, executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith. His immersive, history-driven design approach brought 1624 Angola vividly back to life and earned widespread acclaim. In recognition of his skills and international reach, Gray joined the British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) in 2023. He also holds multiple prestigious accolades, including the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) and the International Independent Film Awards - Platinum Award for Noem My Skollie. Gray describes his design philosophy as rooted in detailed world-building and technological innovation. He was an early adopter of SketchUp, once mapping an entire island on location in Mozambique-a process that brought architectural plans to life for Icon Pictures in New York. Today, he continues to integrate advanced tools like LiDAR and Blender into his design workflow. Beyond his personal accomplishments, Gray is committed to sharing knowledge and inspiring his teams. His collaborative leadership style-and the authenticity he brings to his work-has been a powerful driver of excellence and innovation on set.
